Democrats Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials expressed outrage after the ex-president charged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "by death" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Recording That Sparked the Dispute
The clip, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in defense or defense roles.
"Like us, you all took an oath to safeguard and uphold this constitution," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "At present, the dangers to our governing document are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can decline illegal orders, you should reject unlawful commands. No one has to carry out commands that contravene the law or our founding principles."
Trump's Furious Response
The recorded statement reportedly provoke a heated response from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Risky to our Nation. Their words cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Respond
Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader issued a unified statement denouncing the remarks.
"Violent politics has no position in the United States," they stated. "Congress members who were featured in the video all worked our United States with tremendous patriotism and distinction. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and harmful calls for execution against members of Congress, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to make certain the protection of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these unhinged online messages and retract his violent discourse before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.
Representatives' Defiant Response
The representatives who were featured in the video also issued a response.
"We identify as former service members and defense specialists who love this nation and made an pledge to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States," they stated. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to keep it. No intimidation, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important obligation."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to restate the legal requirements," they continued. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their vow to the founding principles and duty to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "The entire nation must unite and condemn the former president's calls for our execution and political violence. This is a moment for principled stance."
More Political Reactions
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is requesting the capital punishment of elected officials."
He continued: "This is an direct THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, the entire nation – regardless of party – should denounce this right away and absolutely."
The GOP leader supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", describing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of Congress telling soldiers to defy commands, I think that is unprecedented in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also reportedly stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and decide all that."
Administration Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson replied: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the representative said. "There are active officials of the American legislature who conspired to arrange a video message to individuals of the national defense, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the president's legal commands."
She added: "The integrity of our military rests on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can result in casualties, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are basically promoting."
