Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared earlier today that depict the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site of where the images were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.
Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
