The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a major honors show approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
