What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
